A Family Legacy
For me, growing up in the UK with parents from Kpando in Ghana’s Volta Region, the sounds of Ewe were as much a part of our home as the English we spoke at school. My brothers and I aren’t native speakers, but our parents made sure we could understand and hold our own in conversation.
Now, as a parent myself, I’m determined to pass that on. I started by teaching my daughter animal names, but when I looked for Ewe words online, I found so many different translations—and no way to know which were right.
I knew I couldn’t compromise on authenticity. So, I worked with elders and specifically Professor Agbele in Kpando, Ghana, to carefully verify every single word. The result is Eʋegbe Lãwo – Ewe Animal Flashcards – a collaboration across continents and generations, built on trust and a promise to honour our heritage.
